Major League Baseball 2K8 - Buy
I have always been a fan of baseball games for all the consoles so I was looking forward to trying one out for the Wii. I read a couple of reviews that I agree with now that I have played it. The most important thing is that it is a very fun game. It has season and franchise modes as well as home run derby and all of the normal stuff you come to expect from a baseball game today. I really like the pitching and the batting is isn't perfect but does well considering the equipment they had to work with. One of the flaws which I have read from other reviews is that it is way to easy to hit home runs, even if you have it on the hardest level. I cranked out 5 in a row at one point in my first or second game (although that was on the default level). Luckily, there is a rememdy for this just by adjusting the sliders. You can change the sliders playing on any level. One other thing that might bother some is that there is no online play or downloads for updated rosters. I enjoy just playing with my Cubs in the franchise mode. I have yet to call up anyone from the minors or make any trades (both of which you can do in franchise mode) but I just recently got the game and I am also happy with my players.

First Impression: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
We got our hands on a copy of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption last night, and thus far my experience can be summed up in three words:
Best ... Metroid ... Ever!
I played long enough to get to the third level last night, which is actually only the beginning of the main story line (at least, I think ... there could be more twists and turns ahead, and in fact that's usually a given in the Metroid Prime series). However, what I've seen so far has completely blown me away.
I'll admit, I wasn't exactly hopeful for this title. The screenshots and trailers I had seen left me with the impression that it was just more of the same. There didn't appear to be any major improvement in the graphics from the previous Gamecube versions, and I had found the earlier titles just a bit repetitive. They were good games when first playing them, but then they just seemed to get bogged down in the same tasks over and over.
Thus far, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption appears to have left the other two in the dust, as far as charting new ground. The first three levels have not only been fun to play, but fascinating just to see what else is going to happen. My son Paul had the honors of playing the game first, and I was having just as much fun watching him as he was playing.
I've also had pleasure of squaring off against the first two bosses, neither of which was a cakewalk. The first, in hindsight, seems easier now that I've faced the second, though. That first boss, though, requires a good couple minutes of on-target blasting before you even begin causing it damage. The good news, however, is that once you are able to reveal its weakness, it is fairly easy to dispatch of with a few well-placed missles or charge beams.
The second boss, however, beats all I have seen in the Metroid series. Basically, Samus is in freefall inside some huge pit, avoiding the walls, because they too cause damage, and fighting against a huge dragon who is blasting back with all sorts of nasty beams and fireballs. The trick to this one is, again, finding those brief and tiny instances of weakness, but with the added bonus that not only do you have to kill the dragon before it kills you, you also have to kill it before crashing to the bottom of the pit. I tried and failed twice before finally defeating this baddie seemingly inches from the bottom.
The only problem I've had so far is getting a handle of the Wii controls. Aiming with the remote does definitely add a great new wrinkle to the game, but if you're like me and frequently forget to keep it aimed at the screen the entire time, you find yourself looking in some completely useless direction or spinning around like a top, which is totally embarrassing in front of the other bounty hunters.
That's just a minor quibble, though, and probably due more to my shoddy gameplay than a problem with the game. For now, I would have to give Metroid Prime 3: Corruption a "buy" recommendation.
However, do yourself a favor and spring the extra few bucks for the guidebook to go along with it. I didn't and found myself completely lost at a couple of points.

On tap: E3 Wii
Oh boy, I can't help but be excited today. Around noonish, eastern time, Nintendo takes the stage at E3 and gives us a peek at what to expect for the Wii over the next few months. You can watch the news unfold as it happens on G4 or over at their website at G4tv.com.
For gamers, E3 is truly an exciting time. The only day that is more like Christmas in the video game world is ... well, Christmas.
There are already rumors flying, with Nintendo being well-known for dropping a few surprises on us. Some are expecting announcements for some games we haven't seen on the Wii yet, like Mario Kart. Personally, I'm hoping for and salivating in anticipation of an in-depth look at the new Metroid game, since we're only seven weeks from that game hitting shelves.
And there are already a few things we know. The one I am most excited about is Namco's announcement that upcoming game Beautiful Katamari will abandoning the PS3 and be released only on the Xbox 360 and ... drumroll ... Wii! Actually, I don't know which news is more noteworthy -- being able to play a Katamari game on the Wii, or the continuing implosion of the PS3. I've already said how much I love the Katamari series of games, and it was disappointing when the announcement first came that the new game would only be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360. But now that disappointment has come full-circle.
On the other hand, the lack of a Katamari game on the PS3 is big heaping spoonful of good news for Wii afficionados too. The Wii has broken new ground as a game system designed for a wider audience than just hardcore gamers, attracting people who haven't picked up a game controller since the joystick. The Katamari series of games attracts the same audience, so the lack of a PS3 version of the game only solidifies the Nintendo's market domination over Sony.
We also know one thing we won't be seeing -- Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Nintendo announced that it wouldn't be showing this highly anticipated game, much to the disappointment of a lot of fans of the series. However, they have firmed up their intention to release the game within the 2007 calendar year.
Hang on, folks, we're just a little over an hour away of having a whole slew of new information to whet our appetites for the coming weeks and months.
UPDATE, 11:30 a.m.: This news came out yesterday, but I just found it. E3 has announced that they are bringing Sid Meier's Civilization series to the Wii and DS. If there is one game that could possibly have me drooling more than Beautiful Katamari, it's Civilization. The game is digital crack. I have literally lost days of my life playing previous incarnations of the game. What begins as me deciding to play for an hour or so in the morning somehow becomes me calculating how much longer I can play and still get a halfway good night's sleep. There will be a bit of a wait, though. Civilization: Revolution will now hit stores until next spring. But initial reports have the game taking full advantage of online gameplay and there is even a mention of voice chat. Somebody pinch me!

Review: Excite Truck
This game was awesome! It doesn't have a story or anything, but it really doesn't need it. Basicly it's just drive, crash, and blow stuff up. What more do you want. Trucks? There's like 20 of them. Well if you're not so good at first, don't give up -- just throw the controller and try again. But seriously, it gets a lot easier. Or at least it did for me. Well this game is pretty cool. Next to Super Paper Mario it's the best game on the Wii that I've played. Soooooooooooooooo....... BUY IT!

My Ratings System: Buy, Rent, or Pass
Okay, after not much consideration, I feel that this simplified ratings system best keeps with the theme of our blog. Keep in mind that I am speaking solely on my behalf but to me this site is not so much about nailing down some arbitrary ratings number as much as it is here to publish simply whether or not a game is worth buying. So with my ratings, you won't have to decipher exactly what a certain number means. If I think it is worth spending money on, I will come right out and say it. If I don’t think you should waste your money, then following my review will be my suggestion to pass.
There will be some games I will suggest renting as opposed to buying or passing. This will most likely be the case if I feel the game is too easily completed but is still a lot of fun (while it lasts). Other factors (such as excellent multi-player modes) could upgrade my recommendation and in those circumstances, I will be sure to explain my reasoning.

Game Review: Medal of Honor: Vanguard
This game doesn't seem to offer much new to the gaming world but it is still fun to play. I saw one review online that gave it a 5.5 out of 10. I think it definitely deserves better than that. Of course since the game is played on the Wii, the controller set-up is different from traditional games like it. This takes a little getting used to but it is not difficult.
I started this post a little over a week ago. Since then I have been bombarded with dental, medical and computer problems. To quote my brother however, I am happy to say that finally life relents. I have had a little more experience with this game and it seems that one of things I feared about it is true. The game, while fun, is simply too short. I have not spent that much time playing but have already completed three out of the four campaigns. I have decided on a ratings system which I will begin using in this blog. Quite simply, my reviews of games will culminate with my suggestion to either "Buy", "Rent", or "Pass". My explanation for this ratings system will be in my next post.
"Medal of Honor: Vanguard" Conclusion: Rent
